Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here

Dinanzi a me non fuor cose create
Se non etterne, e io etterno duro....

Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate.

Nessun maggior dolore
Che ricordarsi del tempo felice
Nella miseria.

"I want my illustrations for Dante to be like the faint markings of moisture in a divine cheese... Mysticism is cheese; Christ is cheese, better still, mountains of cheese!"
~Salvador Dalí

Hello, there.

You don't know me, and I don't know you. Or perhaps we do know each other. Perhaps neither by name, nor face, but know each other nonetheless. Perhaps we've spoken in person before. Maybe only brushed shoulders. Maybe we will never meet. What can be said of me with words is irrelevant and insufficient. That is what this journal is for. In this vast region of cyberspace... of the world... it is easy to forget how close we are as humans. In our individual realities, it is easy to forget the larger picture. In all of our differences and our prejudices, it is easy to forget the likenesses and commonalities we bear to one another.

With the digital age upon us, it is easy for us as humans to forget how wide the planet yet stretches. There is still wonder in the world. There are still discoveries to be made and surprises to be found. Let us yet be open to astonishment and awe. With everyone connected by wires and waves, with the fear of loss of privacy, it is easy to forget how distant we are prone to becoming. With all of our scrambling to be in the loop and in the know, it is easy to forget the beautiful unique qualities that make each of us special.

Therefore, who am I? I am your sister. I am your lover. I am your neighbor. I am your friend. I am your nemesis. I am your rival. I am your patron. I am your tutor. I am a stranger.

I'm a life-liver.
Striver.
Surviver.
Fault-forgiver.
I'm a music maker.
Singer.
Summer fling-er.
Risk-taker.
An up-all-nighter.
A paperback writer.

All the world's a stage. Break a leg.
All the world's a song. Take a deep breath.

You will understand me when you are ready. No sooner and no later. I will understand you when I'm ready. No sooner and no later. Do not confuse the institution with the individual, nor the child with his symptoms. Doubt is the brother of shame, yet also the shadow of truth.

And so you have stumbled across my corner of the internet. Weary traveler, whose roads go ever, ever on, may you find some respite and solace here. Fresh beginner, who takes the road less traveled by, may your future journeys be aided somewhat by my humble musings. In small measure, we have made contact. Through these lines of text, we have found each other.

I wonder who you are.
